Paintball is a sport for teams. The aim, amongst others, is to mark the opposing team using food colouring. The corresponding coloured ammunition (food colouring in gelatine bullets) are shot from paint guns. The sport has this ammunition to thank for its name: Paint, for the colours shot and balls referring to the gelatine bullets. The projectiles used in Paintball are called markers. In Germany, markers can be purchased by individuals of legal age.
Paintball in Germany
There is a difference on an international level for example between tournament and recreational players. As a recreational sport, paintball is often referred to using the American term 'Gotcha'. A significant step for paintball becoming an established sport was the founding of the US NPPL (National Professional Paintball League) in 1992/1993. The first paintball world championships took place in 1996. In Germany for example, the sport of paintball is organised at club level in the Deutsche Paintball Liga (DPL) or the Deutsche Paintball Sports Liga (XPSL). Both organisations have State and Regional leagues as well as first, second and third National Divisions. The most played version of paintball at tournaments is called 'Capture the Flag' where two teams with the same number of players try to capture the opponent's flag. Examples of versions with a recreational role are 'Elimination' or 'Last Man Standing'.
Besides appropriate outer and inner clothing, the required equipment for playing paintball consists above all of a paintball mask that should protect the eyes, mouth and nose from being hit. When playing at paintball grounds, the wearing of such masks is obligatory. A so-called barrel sock is used to secure the marker so that away from the playing area you are not hit by a paintball due to an unintentional discharge of the marker. Custom or paintball Jerseys are available, for example, online for paintball players. As required, teams can also have individual custom or paintball Jerseys designed.
