History of Basketball

The ball game of basketball originated in Canada in 1891. By 1930, basketball was already an Olympic sport. The renowned US league, the 'National Basketball Association' (NBA) gained its name in 1949. In 1946 the league was originally called the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The admittance of professional players to the Olympic Games in 1992 was of international significance for basketball. Today the sport is played around the world. Every four years the world basketball association, the 'Federation Internationale de Basketball' (FIBA), holds the Basketball World Cup. The competition is held in a different country each time. Today, basket ball has spread around the world and many countries have a basketball league. The German Basketball League (the Basketball-Bundesliga (BBL) was founded in 1966. Basketball is played with a ball made of leather or synthetic material with nylon thread. An official match ball for men's basketball is size 7. This means it has a circumference of 749-780 mm and a weight of 567-650 grammes. In contrast, ladies generally play with a smaller, size 6, basketball.
